Bullying can take many forms and is not limited to physical force. It can take place in the cyber and physical spheres and includes actions that can physically harm, emotionally hurt, intimidate or manipulate a person into doing what they don’t want to. A 2017 report stated that bullying in Pakistan is rapidly growing and it currently place 22 out of 25 countries for the highest rate of cyber-bullying.

Bullying in school is often ignored and the signs are sometimes difficult to pick up on. Furthermore, children are less likely to approach a problem head-on or complain about it. There are certain signs that you can however, pick up on that could potentially mean that your child is being bullied.

Unexplained headaches, stomach aches or other complaints

Waking up with any ailment that doesn’t have an explanation- and seems to happen frequently maybe a red flag. It isn’t that your child is making up illnesses but keep in mind that anxiety manifests itself in many ways- anxiety could be a legitimate cause of a stomach ache in children, they just don’t know how to explain it.

Reluctance in going to school

Where a once happy child was super eager to go to school, he/she is now reluctant or not as excited for school- it may be time to ask questions. Ask teachers if he is acting differently, check for other behaviors that are unlike him and may be due to bullying in school.

Answers to questions don’t add up or if he/she avoids answering certain things

If your child is giving you answers that don’t add up or answers simple questions like ‘did you have fun in school today?’ with vagueness or disinterest, it may be a sign of concern. Although, many children do not tend to answer questions and it does not indicate bullying. Lack of coherence and connectivity in stories is more of a red flag.

Lack of interest in social activities/ lesser friends

All of a sudden your child is not going to birthday parties, or is not interested in play dates. He/she may not want to attend extra-curricular activities and seems to have lesser friends than before. If they’re spending more time on cyber-activities or at home instead of playing, then it may be tell-tale sign on bullying.

Fear- seems more attached to family members

Usually children will turn to family members for comfort and acceptance. If your child seems more attached (more than normal) to you/ or other family members, it may be coming from a place of fear. Requests previously uncommon like ‘I want mom to drop me all the way to class’ or ‘can you stay throughout my football session’- could be a sign of worry.

Bullying is something that requires early intervention and a collaboration between the school and the parents to effectively manage. If you feel that your child is being bullied, do not hesitate to ask the class teachers to keep a more vigilant eye on your child and his behavior.

Outdoor Activities- Why They Are Important For Children

It is very common for kids to start owning cellphones from the age of 12-13 or have at least one gadget. We subconsciously train our kids to get attached to devices and technology from a very young age so they can be quieted down and do not disturb their parents. Something we fail to realize is how absorbed kids can be in this world and lose touch with nature. The concept of outdoor activities hardly exists now. The percentage of kids playing sports regularly has decreased as well. Here are some of the advantages we are missing out on by keeping our kids locked in houses all day.

Easily Tired

Although this might not make much sense, but kids can grow tired and bored by sitting indoors all day without any physical activity. This will not only make them hyper, but they will get addicted to technology as an alternative. This is another reason why technology is so widely misused these days, and why cyber bullying is such a common issue. This is because kids have nothing else to do to pass their time.

Outdoor Activities- Why They Are Important For Children

Improper Diet

Since they are not physically active, kids do not feel very hungry. This can have a bad effect on their appetite and growth since they are not getting sufficient nutrients in their diet. This can sometimes lead to malnutrition and deficiencies. Even if kids consume the same amount of food with no exercise, this can lead to kids being overweight and obese.

Weak Immune System

weak Immune System

We are always so worried to keep our kids safe from all kinds of diseases, we hardly let them play outside in the sun or the dirt. While safety measures are important and necessary, parents can go a little overboard. Children should have some experience as to how to deal with small problems by themselves. It is okay sometimes if your kid has a scraped knee or falls down. That’s how kids learn!

Weak Mental Health

Everybody needs a little time to relax and some time on their own. Keeping kids in house all day can lead them to being frustrated or depressed. Especially kids at a growing age need to have some physical activity to let out all the extra energy. Let your children discover new outdoor activities and talents so they may develop an interest in some sport as they grow older.

Social Outings

Taking your kid to the park sometimes or any other activity that involves children in the same age group is a great way for your kid to make new friends. This will not only boost their confidence, but really help them if they are shy. It gives your little ones a chance to practice their social skills and make new friends

Happy outing!

It is true! There actually are food items that can ruin your child’s mood. Not sure what is being mentioned here? Let us inform you!

foods and moods

One of the worst things that young kids can be exposed to are artificial sweeteners. This includes junk items that contain added sugar like biscuits, chocolates, sweets and more. Artificial sweeteners are said to cause irritability and negative excitement.

It is true that you cannot completely banish these items from their diet, but what you can do is control the amount they consume.

foods and moods

Did you know that gluten present in breakfast cereals, cakes and white bread can lead to a general demeanor of negativity? Hence it could be the reason why your child is throwing tantrums and finding problems with everything that you offer. Have you been giving them cereals regularly? Cut down on this breakfast item and instead provide them with eggs, whole wheat bread, beans and nuts.

foods and moods

Fizzy drinks, pasta and white bread are food items that contain high levels of sugars as well as hormone altering chemicals. By eating these foods items, your child’s blood sugar spikes, resulting in recurrent mood swings.

foods and moods

Do you know what simple sugars do to your kids? It makes them aggressive and lead to hyper activity. Especially, if they eat sweet at night. Feeling that your child is not going to bed easily? Well, here is your reason. Simple sugars break down in the body easily and hence lead to high levels of unwanted energy.

foods and moods

Did you know that junk food is the leading cause of obesity among children and adults alike? The salts, sugars and processed additives like MSG in the food items give way to addiction and prompts the child into eating more. The worst part though is that all junk foods like burgers, pizzas, fries, chips, biscuits ensure that the child is completely put off healthy and nutritious food items. These are not the only effects of fast and junk food. Research clearly indicates that they cause constipation, depression, and damage to arteries among kids.

The Bottom Line

If you have been giving the above mentioned food items to your little ones, you need to end it today. Yes easier said than done, but wean them off slowly. Introduce them to everything homemade that is chock full of nutrition. Let them see that food cooked at home can taste as good as the one they crave from outside.

Just make sure you monitor what junk they are consuming. Do not deprive them of anything but make sure their primary intake is of healthy, home-made and nutritious foods.

Although parents may believe they are doing the right thing by hiding negative emotions from their children, new research suggests suppressing negative emotions in front of children and putting on a “happy face” can actually leave parents feeling worse and have a negative effect on their well-being and parent-child bonds.

In the first of two studies a team of researchers at the University of Toronto asked 162 parents to think about past experiences caring for children where they suppressed negative emotions and over-expressed positive ones, before asking them a series of questions on their experience.

The researchers found that over-expressing their positive emotions and hiding the negatives ones in front of the children could come at a cost for the parents, actually leaving some parents feeling worse.

In their second study, the team used a sample of 118 participants and asked them open-ended questions on a daily caregiving experience over the course of a 10-day period.

The results of this study showed that the more challenging the caregiving experience, the more cases there were of parents hiding their negative feelings and over-expressing their positive feelings in front of children.

The detrimental effect on parents was also the same, with parents reporting in both studies a decrease in emotional well-being, relationship quality and responsiveness to their children’s needs, as well as feelings of lower authenticity, when they suppressed their true negative emotions in front of their children and instead expressed more positive, but false, emotions.

“Parents experienced costs when regulating their emotions in these ways because they felt less authentic, or true to themselves,” said lead author Dr Bonnie Le.

“It is important to note that amplifying positive emotions was relatively more costly to engage in, indicating that controlling emotions in ways that may seem beneficial in the context of caring for children can come at a cost.”

The researchers acknowledge that although parents may incur costs to their well-being as a result of hiding their true emotions, further research would be useful to see if children actually benefit from parents’ efforts to hide negative emotions and over-express the positive ones.

“Future research should identify more adaptive ways for parents to regulate their emotions that allow them to feel true to themselves and contribute to the most joyful and optimal experiences of parenting,” said one of the study’s co-authors Dr Emily Impett.

The findings were published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.
