movies 2019

There is so much to look forward to in this New Year. 2019 brings with it not only renewed hopes, dreams, goals, etc. etc. but also the promise of some kickass movies. Some that we have been waiting for since 2009! (hint: involves zombies and Emma Stone) And unlike us with our resolutions, we can be pretty certain they will not let us down.

Here’s a list of 25 movies that we’re most excited for:

Captain Marvel

Marvel comic character, Carol Danvers, is the first female superhero from Marvel to get her own film. Brie Larson will star as Danvers and we have our fingers crossed that this movie is as awesome as DC’s Wonder Woman was.

Release: March, 2019

Avengers: Endgame

This is a direct sequel to Infinity War so we’ll likely see an epic showdown between the Avengers and Thanos.

Release: April, 2019

Joker

An origin movie about the iconic Joker played by Joaquin Phoenix? We’ll camp out to buy the tickets for the first show if we have to.

Release: October, 2019

Spider Man: Far From Home

Just the fact that there is a spider man movie set for release gives us a hint of what’s going to happen in Avengers: Endgame.

Release: July, 2019

Shazam!

A 14 year old kid can turn into an adult superhero by using magic word “Shazam!”. This could either go really well or really bad. We’re intrigued to find out.

Release: April 2019

X-Men: Dark Phoenix

Focusing on the transition from Jean Grey to the powerful Phoenix, this X-Men film had Sophie Turner studying dissociative identity disorder and schizophrenia to lend authenticity to her character.

Release: June, 2019

Hellboy

David Harbour, aka Jim Hopper from Stranger Things, is playing the role of iconic Hellboy.

April, 2019

Maula Jutt

Ever since the trailer for Maula Jutt dropped, we cannot wait to see what Bilal Lashari has in store for us with the high-budget, star-studded movie that this is.

Release: Eid, 2019

Superstar

Starring Bilal Ashraf and Mahirah Khan, this is to be a romantic comedy set to be released around Eid time.

Release: Eid, 2019

Frozen 2

After Frozen released in 2013, there was a bit of a frenzy that was created for the two female leads: Elsa and Anna. Almost 6 years later, we’ll finally get another look at the sisters and embark on another adventure.

Release: November, 2019

The Lion King

Easily the movie we are most excited for is the live action adaptation of the best Disney movie EVER: The Lion King. The trailer has our jaws dropped and excitement levels soaring through the roof.

Release: July, 2019

Aladdin

Another Disney live-action, Aladdin, will be starring Will Smith as the genie and Mena Massoud as street rat, Aladdin.

Release: May, 2019

Toy Story 4

Toy Story 3 had the absolute perfect ending to the series. Or so we thought. Many have questioned the need for a 4th installment in fear of it tarnishing the franchise’s consistent ability to hit it out of the park in terms of popularity. Nevertheless, we’re looking forward to hearing our favorites Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as Woody and Buzz, once again.

Release: June, 2019

Dumbo

The lovable elephant with large ears is back in a live-action animation to get us to cry our hearts out. Also, Tim Burton is the director!

Release: March, 2019

Durj

Shamoon Abbasi’s Durj has us super excited. The trailer looks great and the film is classified as a mystery/thriller. A genre that Pakistani cinema absolutely needed to venture into. To get you psyched: it’s based on true crime stories that took place in Pakistan…involving cannibalism.

Release: TBA

Star Wars Episode IX

Direction is back in the hands of J.J. Abrams. This will be the third and final part of the Star Wars sequel trilogy as well as the last installment of the skywalker series.

Release: December, 2019

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu

Ryan Reynolds will be voicing the lead character of the phenomenon that was Pokémon, Pikachu. And you’ll be hearing him say a lot more than ‘pika, pika’.

Release: May, 2019

Men In Black International

Agents J and K are being replace by Agents H and M played by, wait for it, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. Expect some exceptional cinematic effects!

Release: June, 2019

Ford v. Ferrari

Not Disney, not DC/Marvel/Sci-fi but we’re still looking forward to watching the Christian Bale and Matt Damon film about the true story of the competition between Ford and Ferrari to win Le Mans.

Release: June, 2019

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Quentin Tarantino, baby. AND Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie. Al Pacino and Dakota Fanning. This 1969 LA based film promises to be awesome.

Release: July, 2019

Downton Abbey

You heard me right! Downton Abbey will be released on the big screen after its extremely popular run as a period TV drama. Rumors are that most cast-members will return with a few new additions.

Release: September, 2019

Zombieland 2

TEN years it has been since Zombieland first released. Sci-Fi/Adventure/Comedy, this movie has everything you’re looking for AND Woody Harrleson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin all returning to fight evolved zombies.

Release: October, 2019

The Addams Family

MGM will be releasing its animated film based on the peculiar Addams Family. We’re looking to relive our cartoon-network-based childhoods with this one.

Release: October, 2019

You Are My Friend

Tom Hanks will be playing Mr. Rogers in this much anticipated tear-jerker based on Fred Rogers- a harbinger of the message of kindness and friendship.

Release: October, 2019

Sonic The Hedgehog

Sega’s defining star, Sonic, will be hitting the big screen this year. Super-fast Sonic will attempt to thwart Dr. Eggman’s (Jim Carrey) plans for world domination.

Release: November, 2019

It’s the 31st, plans are falling through or you’ve realized all you’ve planned for New Year’s Eve is watching Christmas movies on Netflix. You suddenly want to get your sh** together and have a little get together, what to do? How to plan? Is this even possible?

Chill. We’ve got you covered. First things first:

YOUR TO DO LIST

Pick a venue

You can keep it small; your garden, living room plus balcony, roof are all great options. It’s best to keep New Year parties outdoors so you can borrow the fireworks display from better prepared party hosts.

Invite people!

It is very likely that most of your friends/family are all set to celebrate the New Year with plans of their own. But if you know that there is a chance there are other potential Netflixers in your circle, give them a call now and let them know about the party.

Sort out the seating

You need chairs! It’s likely you don’t have enough seating for the number of people you’re hosting. If you need to rent those, head out right away and ask vendors/caterers- a bulk of them can be found at delhi colony. If they’re fully booked, now is the time to ask your neighbors for a small favor and borrow their garden chairs.

Sort out the entertainment

*important: delegate the responsibility of entertainment while you can move on to food

  • Music (playlist, speakers, any necessary wires)
  • Hand held sparklers (phul jaris)
  • Game tables: jenga corner, Pictionary, ludo; whatever suits your fancy and whatever you have available.
  • Ask a guest if they can bring their guitar for some inevitable off-key singing
  • If you have kids coming, then bring out some coloring pencils and sketchbooks for them to doodle on
  • Get confetti and party poppers for the countdown moment!
Food

It is the single most important thing that needs to be sorted out but thankfully, also the easiest. Here are some staples for a casual New Year’s Eve party:

  • Plain bakery chips with store bought salsa
  • Pita with bakery bought hummus or dip (the cheese pâté at Pie in the Sky is excellent)
  • It’s best to decide on a no-fuss cuisine (unlike Chinese) that doesn’t require plating and too much clean up. Pizza is easy to manage and always a crowd pleaser. And a trending food item this year with so many great pizza places to choose from! Once again, please keep in mind- you do not have time to cook or manage something fancy. So it’s best to order in or cook one thing is a large quantity.

Other options:

  • Chicken Rolls
  • Chicken wraps– follow our easy video guide
  • Broast
  • Lasagna (if you can find a home-baker who is willing to take a last minute order)
  • Bun kababs
  • BBQ is quick to manage if you have a ready bbq pit- marinate the meat now!
  • Hot dogs
  • Potato salad/garden salad
  • To keep something to snack on: opt for chaat (chatkharay and mirchili are always good) or even pani puri (salman’s pani puri or even Nimco will work well)
  • Ice cream/ kheer for dessert. Sony sweets does an excellent matka kheer that you can pick up.
  • A celebratory cake is never out of place
  • Make arrangements for tea/coffee/green tea
  • Get soft drinks and juices- if you need to arrange other ‘juices’, then make your phone calls asap- it’s New Year’s Eve!
Make it easy on yourself
  • Keep the cooking to a minimum- order in to make it easier on yourself. To avoid the new year’s eve backlog- call the restaurant of your choice in advance and let them know what to time you want your food delivered
  • Use paper plates and cups to minimize washing up
  • Delegate, delegate, delegate
  • Keep garbage bags handy so there is a ‘clean as you go process’
  • Have fun! And remember, your guests will have fun if you have fun.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Here are some trends that we do NOT want to see next year

1.      Pizza

I can hear you laughing at me. Pizza is not a trend, it’s a staple. However, this year we have seen pizza being taken a little more seriously than before. We had places like POMO and Junaidi’s enter the pizza scene with claims to authentic pizza making styles (Neapolitan and New-York style, respectively). Famous O’s opened up shop. Easy had everyone raving about their whipped ricotta pizza, Detroit style. Ergo: pizza in 2018= trending!

2.      Health Food

photo: evergreen/facebook

Evergreen, chatterbox deli, the F word are all additions to the much needed health food restaurant pickings in Karachi. Many established eateries also introduced Keto menus and have made sure to have options for the health conscious.

3.      Tacos

photo: mrfoodiekhi/loco/facebook

Tacos were the trend of 2017. We feel that it spilled over into 2018, especially in Pakistan. Loco maintained its place in Karachi as one of the most consistently great restaurants to visit- and their tacos are nothing short of fantastic. Tacos can be seen on menus in high-end eateries (Cote Rotie) and fast food joints (Hoagies), alike.

4.      Comfort food

photo: BabaMoo/facebook

Comfort food is undoubtedly a trend this year- with eateries like Easy and Baba Moo dishing out loaded hot-dogs, cheese doused everything and places like Mews and Jucy Lucy keeping it equally indulgent with signature dishes like mac and cheese and cheese stuffed beef burgers. Let’s not forget that 2 Guys 1 Grll also opened its doors this year with the famous doughnut burger. Comfort food is shouting loud and proud that it is here to stay. And slay. All those expected New Year’s resolutions.

5.      Potatoes

photo: No Lies Fries/facebook

The best vegetable ever gains even more popularity with loaded jacket potatoes hitting the market and places like No Lies Fries giving us our poutine fix along with many other loaded fries options. The patatas bravas from Loco have also been a massive hit.

6.      Modern cuisine

photo: Kudu/facebook

New restaurants like Thyme and Kudu are setting the bar for what is to come in 2019. Opting for riskier menu options and giving presentation and theatrics the necessary attention, it seems that modern cuisine is finally attempting to break through to Karachi’s mainstream.

7.      Éclairs

photo: dezato/facebook

Marcel’s was the talk of the town when it first opened. Not just due to the famous 25,000 rupee cake but also for the French flair it lent to our city. Éclairs, although always available in many local bakeries, had a sudden epiphany that they were imposters in the face of the real French treats- and they stepped up their game accordingly. Most bakeries have done a revamp of the ‘cream stuffed soggy choux’ and éclairs, in their correct form, are now available readily at places like Hobnob, Dezato, Lal’s and many more.

8.      Soft Serve

Not only has soft serve picked up its pace in 2018 with places like the Waffle Witch and Crave Bar increasing massively in popularity, but the flavors have also ventured beyond the staple vanillas and chocolates. The waffle witch put out a most delicious cereal milk flavor, and the crave bar has not ceased in popularity since it opened. Easy keeps us excited with new flavors like matcha and red velvet hitting the menu.

Here’s everything we’re looking forward to in 2019
