Slugging is simply coating your face in Vaseline, also known as petroleum jelly or another similar ointment, overnight. This process can help repair the damaged skin and heal and rebuild its barrier. In addition, it locks in hydration and forces the moisture back into the cells.
The Traditional Way – The Overnight Slug
Our skin repairs itself at night time, so including Vaseline in your night routine is the best way to heal the skin. Remember, Vaseline can be messy and sticky and will definitely leave some grease marks behind, so cover your pillow with clean but old pillowcases.
Step 1: Follow your regular night skincare routine.
Step 2: Right after applying all your products, scoop a small size of Vaseline on your hands and use it on your skin.
Step 3: Wash off the Vaseline in the morning.
The Less Sticky Way – The Short-Contact Slug
The downside of the overnight method of slugging can be overcome by this short contact method. This will provide you with little hydration and also heal any damaged skin area.
Step 1: Cleanse your face with a gentle face wash.
Step 2: While your skin is still slightly damp, apply a thin layer of Vaseline.
Step 3: After an hour, wash your face and follow your everyday routine.
For Acne Prone Skin – The Half Face Slug
Acne and oily skin are not the ones that are recommended to slug. The reason is Vaseline is so occlusive that it won’t let your skin oils escape that will make your skin even more oily, and stimulate acne. Also, as winter is coming around, their skin can be a little drier in some areas. So, instead of slugging the whole face, you can slug the drier part of their skin overnight or in short contact.
