This year, Ramadan has coincided with the summer season. And to make matters worse, in Karachi, we have been hit with a dreadful spell of heat-waves, leading to extended daylight hours. As such, if the body does not receive the necessary energy to maintain its growth during summer, it could lead to severe issues, including hair loss.
Hair loss can occur for various reasons, including aging, malnutrition, stress, anxiety, pregnancy and the likes.
Dr Nazir Hussain, host of the TV show Tib-e-Nabvi, talks in detail about the connection of hair loss and Ramadan and shares anecdotes about its solution according to religious scriptures. He shares with us ways in which our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) managed to take care of his hair during summer days while fasting.
According to him, there are two major reasons as to why hair loss occurs during summers; first, growth of fungus on the scalp and second, low hemoglobin – lesser than 13.5 grams. While it is normal to lose up to 10 strands of hair every day, losing more than that can be a problem, according to him.
But fortunately, hair loss can be cured in Ramadan. Since the consumption of dates (khajoor) is the main source of breaking the fast all over the world, it can also work as an antidote to curb falling hair. According to Dr. Nazir, dates are known as iron capsules; this means that dates can help increase your hemoglobin levels and fight against growth of fungus in your hair. A minimum of five to six dates should be taken every day by those who face such issues.
While narrating past instance, Dr Nazir discussed how Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) hair were always naturally maintained. The Prophet (PBUH) used to apply oil (especially olive oil) on his hair and beard, and he also used to apply water on his beard before combing it. While combing his hair, he often parted them in the middle. Also, he used to do all of this with an ivory comb. Dr Nazir recommends that it is better to use a wooden comb instead of a plastic one. A hair brush made of steel can also be used.

Furthermore, Dr Nazir states,
“Those who suffer from anemia or extreme weight-loss can suffer from hair loss as well. It is recommended for them to consume oatmeal made of barley which would help promote the growth of their hair as well as keep them healthy”.
He recommends that consumption of dates and cucumbers in Ramadan will not only help with your hair but will also be beneficial for your skin.
You can also recite particular duas to help fight against hair loss, Dr Nazir explains. According to one instance, Hazrat Ayesha (RA) stated that when anyone amongst them had an illness, Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) would rub the affected area while reciting the following dua:
“O Lord of the people, remove this pain and cure it, you are the one who cures and there is no one besides You who can cure, grant such a cure that no illness remains”.
Our religion has bountiful wisdom in all its aspects. Discovering it should be our focus. Like Dr Nazir, we all should strive to understand religion in a better way and implement its teachings accordingly.
