Game of Thrones

As we inch closer to the premier of Game of Thrones Season Finale, we get our first taste of what awaits us in April. The fans are stoked and counting down days to witness the conclusion of arguably the greatest fantasy drama series of the 21st century. The ultimate season reverts to old grounds, going all the way back to the first episode of the season. So, what can we make of the trailer? Find out below.

Back to the Origins

One of the first noticeable elements in the trailer is the setting. The teaser takes place in the crypt underneath Winterfell. Apart from the frosty and grim setting you would expect from a season where walking cadavers are waging war against humans, we cannot help but imagine that Game of Thrones is treading familiar grounds – coming full circle in Season 8.

You might recall watching some of the earliest sequences in these crypts, with King Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark paying their respects to the late Lyanna Stark and contemplating on the not so bright future of Westeros.

Voice of the Dead
Similar to the trailer of Season 6, this teaser very much revolves around the dead members of the Stark family. We see Jon, Sansa and Arya pass by effigies of dead family members, and hear important bits of dialogue spoken by them. For instance, Lyanna Stark can be heard urging her brother Ned to look after the infant Jon. While, Catelyn is heard ruing her inability to accept Jon as her son. Interesting to note, Med himself is heard telling Jon that he has Stark blood coursing through his veins.

A Peak into the Future?
Jon, Sansa and Arya’s paths eventually cross where they are confronted by 3 effigies of themselves. This raises all sorts of suspicions, as the Stark family members are not given statues until they pass over and are laid to rest in the crypt. You understand where we are getting, right? The remaining Starks are to be defeated and left to die in a battle with the White Walkers. In case you need more evidence, take a close look at the statue of Jon.

The Lone Wolf Dies, But the Pack Survives
The notion that the Final Season’s first teaser center on the Starks and not the other families only reaffirms our belief that the most celebrated son of the Starks, Jon would be the focal point here. Remember that iconic line from the end of Season 7 when Arya and Sansa called it a truce:
When snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.”

Here, we witness the Stark pack standing in unison against the coming winds of winter; Jon and Arya with swords drawn and Sansa protected by her status as Lady of Winterfell. So why the statue then? Perhaps the teaser is a reminder that as long as the Starks stick together, they will weather the storm.

Is Bran the Night King?
There is one member of the Stark family that was nowhere to be seen in the trailer – Bran. Is it possible that Bran’s absence is a sign of sinister events to occur? Evidence points towards the fact that he could be the Night King, and the feather freezing might just be a hint left to us by the creators.

More evidence comes in the form of his attire, which bears striking semblance to the man whom the Children of the Forest used to create the first White Walker. Also, the actor portraying Bran suggested that he’d be down to portray the character of the Night King.

The Feather
Finally, the feather makes its return for the Season Finale. We first had the glimpse of it in the Season premier, with King Robert placing it at the statue of Lyanna Stark during his visit to Winterfell.

The feather then reappeared in Season 5, when Littlefinger and Sansa discuss the histories of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. Another example of the series coming full circle?

Yes, you read that right. This article is about theorizing what is going to happen in Season 8 of Game of Thrones. There is no denying that since its inception, Game of Thrones has shot to success on a cosmic level. People simply cannot seem to have enough of the Lannisters, Starks and of course, the dragons. After the conclusion of Season 7, fans have their fingers crossed for the final season.

Much has been made of how things will unravel in the final season, with fans making all sorts of claims. You won’t believe the extent to which obsessed fans go to analyzing each frame to figure out what’s happening. In this article, let us look at some of the most mind-boggling theories put forward by fans for the final season.

The Return of Melisandre

Melisandre, the Red Priestess made a not so memorable threat at Varys before charting a course across the Narrow Sea to Volantis, which is one of the Free Cities of Essos. However, that is not the last we will see her on the show. Remember her words? “I will return, dear Spider, one last time. I have to die in this strange country, just like you.”

Since Melisandre is a Red Priestess in the religion of R’hllor the Lord of light, which has played a significant role throughout the series, but not fully expounded. Within Volantis, is one of the largest Red Temples in the religion of R’hllor. This is also the place where we met Kinvara – the Red Priestess from Season 6.

If memory serves you well, Kinvara met Tyrion and told him she believed that Daenerys is the Princess that was promised. She also agreed to persuade her people to follow Daenerys, which is music to our ears, since she enjoys a big rep where she is from (just read her full title).

Now, considering they are both going to cross paths in Volantis and they both believe in Daenerys’s cause, one can speculate Melisandre and Kinvara will team up. As pointed out by fans, Volantis is protected by a massive army called the Fiery Hand, which Tyrion comes across in A Dance with Dragons.

So, an army that adheres to a fire god sounds a pretty useful prospect in waging war against the army of the dead since fire maybe the only way to defeat them.

Ned Stark is Alive and will Make a Comeback

Ok, so this is a little bizarre, but a lot of evidence points towards the fact that he could return for the season finale. According to reliable sources, a number of characters they did not expect to see returned. Characters like Jon Snow, The Hound, Beric Dondarrion, The Mountain and in the books, Catelyn Stark are all brought back to life in form or another.

We were all witness to Ned’s head decapitated and placed on a spike on the ramparts of King’s Landing. The question is, what if we were made to believe that it was Ned Stark while the actual Ned is waiting to reappear?

The theory goes Jaqen H’ghar of the Faceless Men and Ned Stark were being held captives in the Red Keep. Again, if you recall, back in Season One, Arya first comes in contact with Jaqen when he is being transported out of the Red Keep as a fugitive. Doesn’t it seem a tad bizarre that a Faceless Man would be so easily held captive?

So, the logical conclusion is that he was kept as a prisoner with some intent and that intent was for Varys to pay Jaqen to substitute Ned Stark at his execution. Ned has been hiding and travelling all the while away from Westeros where nobody can get the wind of him. He is also conspiring with Varys to help pay off the debt owed to the Faceless Men.

Tyrion is Afterall a Targaryen, too

Given that we know Jon Snow is Targaryen, the next big shock will come from no other than Tyrion. According to the A + J theory, which states Aerys and Joanna equal Tyrion. The books shed light on the Mad King Aerys’ obsession with Tywin Lannister’s wife, Joanna. According to this theory, Aerys copulated with Jonna, who perished when giving birth to Tywin (similar to two other Targaryan siblings: Jon and Daenerys).

This scenario also explains Tywin’s final words to Tyrion, “You’re no son of mine, to go with his apparent dislike for his youngest son. Also, remember how comfortable Tyrion was with those little dragons?

Who is the Night King?

While there are not very clear hints going into the final season, fans are convinced Bran is the Night King. Their argument is that his wardrobe bears striking semblance to the man whom the Children of the Forest used to create the first White Walker (believed to be a Stark). Funnily enough, Isaac Hempstead, the actor who plays Bran said it would be cool to portray the Night King.

NOTE: All these are hypothetical fan created theories and none of this depicts the truth.

Ever since HBO announced last year that a pilot has been ordered for a Game of Thrones prequel, we have been beyond excited- and perhaps a little skeptical too. However, they have JUST announced the cast members that will be starring in the GoT prequel.

The prequel has been worked on by George R.R Martin himself alongside writer, Jane Goldman. They will also produce the show.

“(The prequel) chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: It’s not the story we think we know.”

Even though details are not clear, but some speculation indicates that the show may be about the ‘Long Night’ that is often referred to in the GoT series. This is obviously thousands of years before Jon Snow and Daenarys Targaryen enter the story so we must give up hopes of seeing the current GoT cast in the prequel.

The cast members have officially been announced and we are even more excited to see the magic they bring to the table.

Meet the cast:

Naomi Watts will star in GoT prequel

Naomi Watts

Georgie Henley (The Chronicles of Narnia)

Josh Whitehouse

Naomi Ackie (Star Wars Episode IX)

Jamie Campbell (Twilight)

Toby Regbo (Crimes of Grindelwald)

Ivanno Jeremiah (Black Mirror)

Denise Gough

Sheila Atim (Harlots)

Alex Sharp

The prequel is speculated to air at least one year after the final season of Game of Thrones. Shooting is to begin early this year.
