A sore throat may not be a problem serious enough to consult a doctor but it can definitely be very annoying. The constant itchiness and pain in the throat makes it difficult to swallow food, drink fluids or even sleep. A sore throat is caused due to viral or bacterial infections. The irritation is a result of the inflammation of the mucous membranes in the throat.

However, there is no need to worry. Here are some home remedies for sore throat that will definitely help you out:

1.     Salt and Water Gargles

One of the simplest yet effective remedies is the infamous salt water gargles. Heat one cup of water to the hottest temperature you can tolerate and add a teaspoon of salt to it. Now gargle using the solution and spit it out. Repeat the process every 2 or 3 hours. The gargles will help reduce the swelling of the mucous membranes and cleanse the throat.

2.      Honey

Honey is probably the sweetest remedy for a sore throat! Raw honey is known to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It can help soothe the pain and reduce cough caused by a sore throat.

The best remedy is to add one teaspoon of ginger powder, honey, and juice of half a lemon in half cup of warm water. Or you can even consume raw honey. However, do not give it to children below the age of one as it can cause infantile botulism.

3.      Chicken Soup Or Stock (Yakhni)

The amino acid produced in chicken stock can reduce respiratory system’s inflammation. Bone broths promote healing and are full of nutrients. Consuming them warm can help you tackle a sore throat. Similarly, chicken soup too is a form of comfort food that can ease the irritation caused by a sore throat and keep you hydrated.

4.      Apple Cider Vinegar

Acetic acid is the main ingredient in apple cider vinegar. The coating of this acid on the throat can kill bacteria and wash away germs. It also breaks down the formation of mucus. Add one table of ACV and honey to one cup of warm water, and gargle with it.

5.      Peppermint Tea

The menthol in peppermint can help cool your throat and break down mucus. Moreover, the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial/viral properties of peppermint can reduce dry cough and itching in the throat. You can either drink peppermint tea or use diluted peppermint oil sprays.

6.      Garlic

When we crush fresh garlic, an organosulfur compound called allicin is released. Allicin is known to fight infections and help reduce inflammation. You should either suck on a clove or chew it for the most effective results. However, you can also mix it to honey and olive oil for better taste.

7.      Licorice Root (Mulethi)

Either chewing a piece of licorice root or drinking licorice tea can help soothe your throat pain. It is known for being similar to aspirin and has powerful antimicrobial properties.

8.      Sleep

Lack of rest can cause a lot of health problems. It is important to maintain a stable sleep routine in order to boost fitness and efficiency throughout the day. A good night’s rest can help your body restore its health and reduce the inflammation that causes sore throats!
