What To Do When An Earthquake Hits

584

Thankfully, earthquakes aren’t something Pakistanis frequently need to worry about. In the last few years, we haven’t had very serious earthquakes. But, our history does involve some severe ones that caused a lot of destruction. So, it never hurts to be prepared.

Preparation

The first thing you need to do is take a CPR and first aid course. These are extremely important for any emergency situation and have saved countless lives.

The next thing on the list is preparing an emergency bag. You can add to it anything you see fit. A few important things are flashlight, spare batteries, charged power-bank, a change of clothes, canned food, and bottled water. Keep this bag in an easy access place.

Learn how to shut off the electricity and gas.

In the case of an earthquake, these could be one of the most dangerous things if left unchecked. Gas can leak or electrocution can occur.

Prepare an emergency plan with your family.

Where will you meet if you cannot contact each other? Is there an elderly in your care who will need assistance in the event of an evacuation? Make a systematic plan for this and decide who will be responsible.

Plan of action

When you feel an earthquake, the first thing you need to do is find a safe spot. If you are outside, move away from any buildings, poles, and cars. If you are inside, get under some heavy furniture like a table. Stay away from anything that could fall on you such as cupboards or a fridge.

Stay under the table until the shaking stops.

Once it’s over, check to see if anyone needs fist aid or other kinds of medical help.

Grab your emergency bag and go outside. Does anyone need first aid?

Don’t return home until the authorities give an all clear!

Stay safe everyone!
