Overview

End of the monthly menstrual cycle in women is termed as menopause. It is diagnosed after absence of menstruation for twelve months or more. It is a common physiological phenomenon that occurs in all women, usually around the age 50. Some adverse symptoms such as hot flashes and emotional disturbance can be experienced as a side-effect of this state.

Causes

Menopause is a natural phenomenon in women and results from a natural decline of reproductive hormones (estrogen and progesterone). This state may also be present in cases of hysterectomies, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or primary ovarian insufficiency.

Symptoms

Symptoms of this health condition are a by-product of a changing hormonal status in a woman and varies widely from person to person. These include:

  • Irregularity in periods before the time of menopause
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Chills or night sweats
  • Hot flashes
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Mood swings
  • Weight gain
  • Thinning of hair
  • Dry skin
  • Loss of breast tissue

Some complications that can arise due to hormonal imbalances during this stage include cardiovascular disease, Osteoporosis, urinary incontinence, decline in sexual functionality, and weight gain.

Diagnosis

Menopause is clinically diagnosed after 12 months of absence of menstruation and perimenopausal symptoms, and hormonal level changes. Tests to rule out thyroid abnormalities may also be conducted.

Treatment

Menopause usually requires no treatment. Management of the adverse symptoms can be gained through estrogen therapy, vaginal estrogen, anti-depressants, and drugs to manage Osteoporosis and other complications.

One of our favorite ways to prepare eggs is this Middle Eastern/Mediterranean Shakshuka. You can top it however you like, but this recipe is sure to make you want to stay true to it. It does not get any better than this.

Read: Try This Delicious Khageena

Shakshuka is prepared with a delicious tomato base, using warm spices and bell peppers, it is then topped off with eggs and left to steam through. It’s one of those dishes that you will feel proud of placing on your table and is loved by all age groups. Best part? You can make 6-8 servings using just one large pan.

Ingredients

2 tbsp. olive oil

1 onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 yellow bell pepper, diced

2 tins crushed tomatoes*

1 tsp. salt

½ tsp. black pepper

1 tsp. red chili flakes

1 tsp. cumin (zeera) powder

5 eggs

Olives (per preference)

Feta cheese (per preference)

Coriander/ parsley (for garnishing)

Method

In a large frying pan, heat olive oil. Add onion and sauté until translucent.

Add minced garlic and cook for a further minute or so until the raw smell is gone.

Now add the bell pepper – you may choose red bell pepper or even green bell pepper, whatever is more conveniently available to you. Stir.

Add two tins of crushed tomatoes – *if you can’t find crushed tomatoes, feel free to use whole peeled tomatoes; you’ll just have to let them cook down a little more.

Cook the tomatoes for a minimum of 10 minutes on medium-low heat, until most of the water evaporates from the tomatoes.

Add salt, pepper, red chili flakes and cumin – stir through.

Spread the tomato sauce evenly across the pan. Carefully crack 5 eggs on top of the sauce, so that the yolk doesn’t break.

Cover and allow the eggs to cook through with the steam. Make sure you don’t cook them for too long, the yolks should be runny and just pink from the top.

Turn off the heat, season with salt and pepper. Top with black olives, feta cheese and chopped coriander.

Serve.

As we inch closer to the premier of Game of Thrones Season Finale, we get our first taste of what awaits us in April. The fans are stoked and counting down days to witness the conclusion of arguably the greatest fantasy drama series of the 21st century. The ultimate season reverts to old grounds, going all the way back to the first episode of the season. So, what can we make of the trailer? Find out below.

Back to the Origins

One of the first noticeable elements in the trailer is the setting. The teaser takes place in the crypt underneath Winterfell. Apart from the frosty and grim setting you would expect from a season where walking cadavers are waging war against humans, we cannot help but imagine that Game of Thrones is treading familiar grounds – coming full circle in Season 8.

You might recall watching some of the earliest sequences in these crypts, with King Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark paying their respects to the late Lyanna Stark and contemplating on the not so bright future of Westeros.

Voice of the Dead
Similar to the trailer of Season 6, this teaser very much revolves around the dead members of the Stark family. We see Jon, Sansa and Arya pass by effigies of dead family members, and hear important bits of dialogue spoken by them. For instance, Lyanna Stark can be heard urging her brother Ned to look after the infant Jon. While, Catelyn is heard ruing her inability to accept Jon as her son. Interesting to note, Med himself is heard telling Jon that he has Stark blood coursing through his veins.

A Peak into the Future?
Jon, Sansa and Arya’s paths eventually cross where they are confronted by 3 effigies of themselves. This raises all sorts of suspicions, as the Stark family members are not given statues until they pass over and are laid to rest in the crypt. You understand where we are getting, right? The remaining Starks are to be defeated and left to die in a battle with the White Walkers. In case you need more evidence, take a close look at the statue of Jon.

The Lone Wolf Dies, But the Pack Survives
The notion that the Final Season’s first teaser center on the Starks and not the other families only reaffirms our belief that the most celebrated son of the Starks, Jon would be the focal point here. Remember that iconic line from the end of Season 7 when Arya and Sansa called it a truce:
When snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.”

Here, we witness the Stark pack standing in unison against the coming winds of winter; Jon and Arya with swords drawn and Sansa protected by her status as Lady of Winterfell. So why the statue then? Perhaps the teaser is a reminder that as long as the Starks stick together, they will weather the storm.

Is Bran the Night King?
There is one member of the Stark family that was nowhere to be seen in the trailer – Bran. Is it possible that Bran’s absence is a sign of sinister events to occur? Evidence points towards the fact that he could be the Night King, and the feather freezing might just be a hint left to us by the creators.

More evidence comes in the form of his attire, which bears striking semblance to the man whom the Children of the Forest used to create the first White Walker. Also, the actor portraying Bran suggested that he’d be down to portray the character of the Night King.

The Feather
Finally, the feather makes its return for the Season Finale. We first had the glimpse of it in the Season premier, with King Robert placing it at the statue of Lyanna Stark during his visit to Winterfell.

The feather then reappeared in Season 5, when Littlefinger and Sansa discuss the histories of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. Another example of the series coming full circle?

Greek Chicken Wraps Recipe

Serves: 4

Marinating time: 1 hour

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 15 minutes

You can turn this already healthy recipe into a low carb version by simply eliminating the tortillas and using lettuce to wrap the elements.

Ingredients

4 chicken breast fillets

Whole wheat tortillas

For marinade:

1 tbsp. ginger garlic paste

1 tsp. salt

½ tsp. freshly ground black pepper

1 tsp. red chili flakes

1 heaped tsp. Dijon mustard

1 tsp. dried rosemary leaves

1 heaped tbsp. mixed Italian herbs (dried)

Juice of 1 lemon

For tzatziki sauce:

¾ cup strained yogurt

½ cup soft white cheese or feta cheese

2 cucumbers, grated and drained of excess water

3 small cloves garlic, minced

1 tbsp. lemon juice

¼ tsp. dried oregano

Salt and pepper, to taste

For chopped salad:

1 full head of iceberg lettuce, chopped

2 cucumbers, diced

2 tomatoes, diced

15 black olives, halved

Method:

Slightly flatten chicken breasts with a mallet or the back of a heavy spoon. This breaks the structure of the tendons in the meat, resulting in a more succulent chicken.

Mix all the ingredients of the marinade with the chicken breasts and set aside for at least one hour.

Toss together all the ingredients for the chopped salad and keep aside for assembling.

To make the tzatziki sauce, combine the yogurt and feta cheese well. Add grated cucumbers, minced garlic and the seasonings. Mix until thoroughly combined.

Heat a grill pan and lightly drizzle with olive oil. Grill chicken for 6 minutes on each side or until cooked through. If you do not own a grill pan, you may use a frying pan as an alternative.

Allow cooked chicken to rest for two minutes before slicing.

Heat tortillas on a pan for 30 seconds on each side. Remove.

Place 2 tbsp. tzatziki sauce on the tortilla, add a small handful of salad and top with a few slices of grilled chicken.

Fold the ends of the tortillas and secure with a toothpick.

Serve.
