How you feed your baby when they are younger can impact their health (and perhaps intelligence) for the rest of their lives. Though many store-bought baby foods contain many of the essential elements of a child’s diet, there is no point in unnecessarily exposing him/her to chemicals when there are plenty of natural and inexpensive baby food options out there.

Babies require a healthy, wholesome diet, rich in essential nutrients for their growing bodies. The following foods are nutrient rich and are highly recommended by child nutritionists and pediatricians.

1. Lentils (Daal) and Dried Beans

Lentils and beans are rich in protein, vitamins like folate and vitamin C and minerals like potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium and phosphorus. Their high fiber content makes them excellent in maintaining healthy digestion in infants.

The recommended age to introduce lentils into a baby’s diet is 8 -10 months, as younger children may not be able to adequately digest them—leading to gassiness.

Lentil baby food is also incredibly simple to prepare—all you really need to do is cook them to obtain the right texture. Lentils can also be mixed with a variety of other baby foods to make an even healthier paste.

2. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a very common food for babies. Babies tend to find them sweet and delicious, and they are packed with carbohydrates (which provide the child with much-needed energy) and vitamin C. They also contain lesser amounts of potassium, zinc, sodium, phosphorus, calcium and vitamin A and B-complex. Sweet potatoes are more nutritious and make for better baby food than regular potatoes.

A baby can consume sweet potatoes at 6 months of age—that is, as soon as they can begin eating solid foods.

Once again, preparation requires very little effort. All you really need to do is peel and mash up the cooked sweet potatoes.

3. Yogurt

Yogurt provides a variety of health benefits for the growing child. It eases digestion, resolves gastric troubles, strengthens the immune system and can be used to help treat insomnia, diarrhea, dysentery and urinary tract infections. These benefits can be attributed mostly to the probiotics in yogurt. Yogurt is also an excellent source of protein, calcium and vitamin D—all of which are needed for bone development. Mixing yogurt with pureed fruits can improve the taste and add some extra nutrients.

4. Bananas

Bananas have mucosal properties which help coat and protect the stomach and aid digestion. They are high energy foods, rich in nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, vitamins A and C and folate.

Babies can eat raw mashed bananas from just six months of age.

It is recommended that sweet fruits and vegetables should be the first foods introduced to a baby, rather than rice or organic cereals.

5. Other Soft Fruits

After about 8 months of age, a baby can begin to consume many kinds of soft fruits. Most such fruits are rich in antioxidants and other nutrients that can benefit the baby’s brain, eyes and even urinary tract. One rule of thumb is that any fruit starting with the letter ‘p’ makes for good baby food—peaches, prunes, pears, plums, papaya etc. Blueberries, mangoes and apricots are also recommended.

6. Avocados

Avocados area a superfood and their soft, creamy texture make them ideal for baby consumption! They are rich in healthy, unsaturated fats (containing 3.5g per serving on average) which are needed for the development of nerve cells in the baby’s brain. Avocados are sodium and cholesterol free and contain several important nutrients including fiber, potassium, vitamin E, folate, phosphorus, vitamin B and iron.

Note: Bear in mind that it is best to discuss any diet plan you may have for your child with a nutritionist or doctor. They can help you ensure that the child is receiving all the nutrients it needs and in the right amounts and that nothing in the diet could be potentially harmful.

6 things you can do to stay healthy during the monsoon - HTV

Health problems are always an issue in monsoon; the air is filled with moisture and impregnated with viruses and disease, the puddles on the road become nesting grounds for mosquitoes and other unruly insects and the change in weather can cause problems with the temperature of your body.

Keeping all these things in mind, here are a few preventive measures that we can take to remain germ-free and healthy.

Take a hot shower after you get soaked in rain

When we get soaked in rain water, our bodies experience a drastic and sudden change in temperature, which can eventually lead to the birth of different diseases.

Taking a hot shower is the best way of getting rid of germs brought by drenching yourself in rain as it stabilizes the cold temperature. For more safety precautions, use an antiseptic soap while taking shower as it may kill possible infections. Also, do not enter in an air-conditioned room with damp clothes or hair as the change in temperature can cause cold and cough.

Skip eating outside

It is very important to avoid eating from outside as much as possible in the monsoon season, especially foods like panipuri, pakoras and samosas.

It is a trend in Pakistan to buy pakoras from outside whenever it rains as they look very tempting but these foods contain bacteria that may cause many infections.

Such foods have germs in them and it may lead to food poisoning. In fact, we should not even drink water from outside as many water-borne diseases like cholera, dysentery etc are caused by impure water. Street golagandas, kulfis and juices are often made from this impure water and these should be avoided during monsoon.

Keep your house clean and pest-free

Keep your house clean and pest-free in monsoon as it brings viral infections like dengue and malaria with it. Make sure there is no leakage or clogging. Water-logging provides shelter to bacteria and mosquitoes; ensure everything is fixed. If there are broken or rusted drainpipes, replace them as they are breeding grounds for bacteria and germs, and cause dengue and malaria.

Change your bed linens and bed sheets and pack away excess pillows and cushions to avoid damp musty odors. Roll up rugs and wrap them in polythene sheets to protect from insect infestation and water.

Check electrical fittings

Ensure the electrical switches of your house are not exposed to rain. If they are, then immediately cover them to stop water penetration and fix water seepage to avoid electric shocks. Replace or fix the damaged electrical cords without any delay.

Do not make these changes on your own if you do not know how to fix them; call an electrician and make sure everything is safe.

Keep yourself hydrated

It is extremely important to keep yourself hydrated during monsoon to build up your resistance that can help fight against infections. Consume less tea and coffee as they dehydrate the fluids in your system, switch to green tea, juices or herbal tea.

Water also cleans your system and washes away bacteria and germs through your excretory system as it prevents and treats you from illnesses.

Say no to termites

Rainwater spoils the wooden flooring or furniture. It is vital to polish or wax to protect your furniture and flooring from damage by moisture. Humid atmosphere supports the growth of termite; check for termite infestation in your house.

The easiest targets for termites can be cupboards or desks – make sure you check these beforehand. Use cloves or neem leaves to keep away these insects.

Everyone loves getting soaked in rain and eating food from outside, but it can lead to serious health-related hazards. Make sure you keep yourself and your family safe by applying these simple techniques.

KARACHI: Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) has discovered filtered water of eight brands perilous; on the other hand, it passed 63 different brands.

The administration lab found that eight brands of filtered water are offering perilous water for human utilization due to chemical and microbiological pollution.

As indicated by the report for the quarter January-March, 2015, the PCRWR gathered 71 specimens of mineral/filtered water brands from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Tando Jam, Lahore, Quetta, Sialkot and Karachi. Examination of diagnostic discoveries with permissible limits of Pakistan Standard Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) uncovered that eight brands, including Al-Haider, Noble, Drop Ice, Al-Sana, Days Pure, Effort, Aqua Safe and Butt were discovered to be dangerous because of compound or microbiological tainting.

Out of those eight hazardous brands, three brands (Al-Sana, Aqua Safe & Days Pure) have relatively abnormal state of Arsenic going from 11-35 PPB compared to PSQCA water quality standard for Arsenic (10 PPB).The excessive level of Arsenic can bring about different sorts of skin diseases, diabetes, kidney infections, hypertension, heart diseases, birth defects, dark foot diseases and numerous sorts of cancers.

Though, three brands, including Drop Ice, Effort & Butt, were discovered to be hazardous because of microbiological contamination which may cause cholera, dysentery, diarrhea, hepatitis and typhoid.

The remaining brands: Noble, Days Pure and Aqua Safe were discovered perilous because of the vicinity of larger amounts of sodium and Al-Haider brand had a hazardously abnormal state of potassium.

The PCRWR requested the national quality control powers to start taking actions against the organizations, which are supplying tainted filtered water.

With the rising trend of drinking bottled water, at least 37 new brands of bottled water have emerged in the market this year, with 42 of the previous ones having completely disappeared from last year and only 34 of them being present consistently.

The report mentioned the reasons for contamination, the most obvious being water pipelines situated very near to open drains and sewage lines. Other contaminants include industrial wastes and agricultural inputs.

The PCRWR had been monitoring the brands and had been making the results public on a quarterly basis. Just before these current results, the council had examined 76 brands for the quarter, October-December 2014, and found 10 brands unsafe for human consumption. These had included the Dewan Water Express, Aqua National, Natur Aqua, Butt Water, Best Natural, Noble, AFRA, NASH, Aftab Qureshi and Ideal Life.
