Wondering why you are having a hair loss problem? The answers may surprise you. Many men and women suffer from sudden hair loss. The cause can be either genetic, stress, diet, medication, or other health conditions.

We normally shed 100 hairs a day. This shedding of hair normally does not cause thinning of hair because at the same time new hair is growing on your scalp. But sudden hair loss is something you need to take seriously.

The most common type of hair loss is caused by genetics, called androgenetic alopecia. With genetic hair loss, you lose your hair gradually with age. But in some cases, it is caused by several nongenetic factors.

1. Psychological Stress

Loss of hair caused by stress is usually temporary. If some have gone through a severe psychological event that has caused major stress, it’s common to excessive hair loss for a couple of months. After six or eight months, hair stops shedding and slowly begin growing back.

2. Side Effect of Anesthesia

If you experience excessive hair loss after 3 months of surgery, it is due to the anesthesia combined with the surgery. Major surgery can put the body under physical stress and it can alter the life cycle of the hairs on your head. Hair loss related to major surgery is temporary, and hair grow back over time.

3. Intake of Drugs

Certain prescription drugs include loss of hair as one of their potential side effects. Medication that can potentially cause hair loss are vitamin A supplements, antidepressants, some arthritis drugs, gout medication, medication for blood pressure and heart problems, and birth control pills. You should consider alternative medication if a prescribed medication is causing hair loss.

4. Iron-deficiency Anemia

Iron-deficiency anemia is one of the common symptoms of a loss of hair. Iron-deficiency anemia occurs because the body’s iron levels are too low. It can be caused due to loss of blood or poor diet. Loss of hair has been shown to be caused by low iron levels.

5. Diet

Your hair needs the proper protein, minerals, and vitamins to grow properly. So, an unhealthy diet such as fried items or fast food can result in sudden hair loss. On the contrary, a lack of proper vitamins and protein while doing a crash diet can also result in hair loss.

6. Hair Tools

Excessive heat while styling hair can leave your hair brittle and damaged eventually resulting in hair loss. So, you should be cautious when using hair tools that can damage your hair rather easily.

If you or a loved one are suffering from hair loss or baldness and would like to learn more about what could be causing your hair loss, you should consult dermatologists.
