Can working longer hours affect relationship happiness? Not according to a new study.
It’s a common belief that spending longer hours at work can cause problems in your relationship. However new research has shown that there is no link between working long hours and an unhappy relationship. In fact, the opposite may be true.
A team of researchers from the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations in Britain studied 285 couples who were both working.
It is commonly said that dual career couples have to choose between having a career that requires long working hours or a happy relationship.
Luckily, the researchers found that this is not true.
From the study it was found that couples who worked long hours tended to make extra effort to spend time with each other. The researchers even went as far as to suggest that longer work hours could, in some cases, be good for a relationship.
The study was published by SAGE in the journal Human Relations in partnership with The Tavistock Institute in Britain. It will be free to access on SAGE for a limited time.
