How to Avoid Falling Sick During a Vacation

Going on a vacation comes with a lot of anxiety. Packing, unpacking and packing again. Making sure all our travel documents are in order. Making an itinerary we know we won’t follow.

And if you are traveling with kids, then boy is that a whole different level of anxiety on its own! Not even going to go there.

But one other thing that stresses us out is the ‘what-if’ of falling sick. We pack antibiotics and other anti-allergy tablets to avoid falling sick and ruining our vacation. But what if we can avoid falling sick all together.

Here are some easy tips that can help you can steer away from catching that bacteria:

Prep for the vacation

Preparing yourself for your next big (or small) vacation doesn’t just mean packing the right things but also preparing your body for it. Sleep for at least 8 hours for nights before you leave. Drink lots of fluids to keep your body hydrated.

And if you are leaving the country then don’t forget to get recommended vaccinations before you travel.

Wash your hands

We know, we know, this is something we have been told ever since we were little but the problem is that we still tend to forget this.

So, while we may be lazy in our own homes or country, it is important to remember to wash our hands in a foreign land. And no just simply using that hand sanitizer you bought from that fancy place isn’t enough. The good old sabun is the real deal. Rinse. Scrub. Repeat.

Drink bottled water

Some countries pride themselves for being clean and hygienic. They may also have potable water fountains. While all that is good, we suggest drinking bottled water to avoid falling sick.

If you are living in a hotel then the room service will fix your bottled water supply every day. You can carry these bottles wherever you go or perhaps purchase them, and consider the amount spent on taking care of yourself.

Because we know us desis spend huge sums on trying exotic cuisines abroad but become stingy when it comes to paying those extra dollars on a bottled water. Got to stop that.

Pro tip: Drink lots of fluids and stay hydrated.

Sleep enough

Most of us believe in tiring ourselves out when at a vacation because we want to be on the move all the time. While it is important to keep tabs of that check-list we have of places to visit and things to do, it is also important to give ourselves some time out.

Tiring our body and mind only makes us vulnerable to falling prey to bacteria in the air as our body’s defense mechanism weakens. So, let’s give ourselves some time to sleep for at least six hours per day as white blood cells in our body increase while we are asleep.

Don’t eat everything

As much as we know that part of traveling is having that wholesome street food at a local market, more often than not, that same food makes us sick.

So be mindful of what you eat and avoid having contaminated food. This means try and ensure, as much as you can, that whatever you eat is fresh, cooked properly and served hot.
