How to Maintain Oral Health during Ramadan

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims are required to fast for 15 to 18 hrs per day which lasts from Sehri to Iftar. Muslims are highly suggested to maintain their body health and keep it hydrated during the non-fasting hours. Surprisingly, most of us do focus on body health during this blessed month, but the one thing we neglect most is Oral Health.

Not eating and drinking anything for 15 hrs can build bacteria in the mouth which makes our breath smell bad. It can be also caused by dehydration. But not to worry, there are ways to avoid foul breath.

Brush/ Miswak:

the best way to get rid of any bad breath is to brush your teeth at least twice a day during the non-fasting hours for two minutes and also don’t forget to brush your tongue vigorously. Another traditional way to clean your teeth is by using Miswak. It has a lot of oral health benefits such as it can control the formation of dental plaque and keeps your breath fresh.

Floss:

Floss is great to remove any food particles stuck between the teeth. One should use floss after using a brush or miswak to get rid of stubborn particles.

Mouthwash:

After using brush and floss, always gargle your mouth with mouthwash for 30 seconds. This will keep your breath minty fresh all day long.

Cut Down Caffeine Intake:

Stop the intake of caffeinated drinks that can dehydrate your body such as tea or coffee. Instead, drink plenty of water and fresh juices that will hydrate your body. During non-fasting hours fill your stomach with at least 7 glasses of water which will also help you overcome the craving for a coffee or tea.

Stop Smoking:

Smoking is another reason for foul breath. Try to reduce your smoking habit during non-fasting hours.

To get through the holy month of Ramadan without any bad breath, it is important to follow these tips to prepare a good oral hygiene routine.
