What is Black Fungus?
Black fungus is clinically known as Mucormycosis, it is a rare Fungai affecting 1 in 10,00,000 people, but with a mortality rate of 50%.
Why is this infection dangerous?
- It can cause blindness, organ dysfunction, loss of body tissue, and even death if not treated on time.
- Chances of infection increases in patients who’re diabetic, COVID positive, and are taking steroids
- Uncontrolled diabetes is the biggest cause for its rising number, especially post-COVID
Infection should be suspected when there is:
- Sinusitis – nasal blockage or congestion, nasal discharge (blackish/bloody)
- Pain on the cheekbones, one-sided facial pain, numbness or swelling
- Loosening of teeth
- Blurred or double vision with pain
- Chest pain and worsening of the respiratory system
Prevention
- Wear a mask while stepping out
- Wear clothes that least expose the skin like long sleeves, full-length pants
- Most importantly for diabetic and other immune-compromised people, controlling sugar levels and blood glucose is a must
- People who are prescribed steroids should constantly monitor and dosage should be reduced in consultation with a doctor
