United Nation’s Survey Reveals Extent of Drug Addiction in Pakistan

A recent survey conducted by the United Nations estimates that there are currently 4,500,000 drug addicts in Pakistan, with the highest proportion of this population located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The report based on Drugs and Crime in Pakistan confirmed that there are currently 1,600,000 drug addicts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa out of which 47,000 addicts use syringes as the prime mode of drug intake. The addicts range between the ages of 15 and 64 years, and are rapidly falling prey to the damaging effects of substance abuse. This report was presented at a meeting held at a local hotel in Peshawar, and counter measures to combat widespread drug abuse were also discussed.
